Interview with AOL's ParentDish!

Today, an interview with me appeared on the site, ParentDish. It's a large mainstream parenting site that gets readers of all kinds.

I was approached to do this interview after I critiqued their religion and spirituality section (after clicking on it, it contained only Christianity and Yoga!) and an editor contacted me about my comment. After some dialogue back and forth exposing my point of view, I was asked to do an interview and I agreed (as long as they promised not to make me look stupid, which I am glad to report that they did not).

While nothing scandalous or new necessarily comes out in the interview, I am glad for the exposure it gives to regular old witches like myself in this country. I laughed when the tags applied included "weird but true"- it's like a tag for my entire life!

The comments range from fundamentalist (mostly Christian) nut-jobs to normal everyday people who actually think before they speak. Feel free to leave your own comments and take their poll, too!

  3. I was kind of surprised you didn't comment about the fact that Christine O'Donnel talked about a Satanic alter and wicca, however, wiccans don't believe in the devil!

That being said - I love your blog and am now following you! :)

  5. hi- found your blog thru the parentdish article. So glad they did that! it's the first interview I've seen with a witch in response to the Christine O'Donnell story. And all AOL stories, no matter how innocent, usually get strange comments from nut jobs and people who speak before thinking! I'm a progressive Christian, who used to and occasionally still does, dabble in witchcraft - thanks for providing a more accurate view of a beautiful religion for those who are willing to listen.

  6. I read that interview just a moment ago, I read the comments as well - Ignorant closed minded people, mostly nut-jobs you're quite correct there!
I wish you the best of luck bringing up your son! You're doing the right thing.
    Much love,
    Sam.

  7. I actually found your blog through the article and wanted to just comment on your beautiful son is. How refreshing it is to have a mother that wants to raise her son to believe in the beauty of nature as opposed to most of the bible thumping catholics I meet. I grew up catholic myself but love to explore all kinds of religions and while I don't identify myself as being apart of any religion I respect them all. Your son is truly precious and you just found yourself a loyal reader :)

  8. I linked into your site from the ParentDish page (they are running the story on a front page of AOL, by the way)because I really wanted to know my comments wouldn't be lost in the 461 some odd others. So, I have to say to the people who slenderize you, your views and the religion are close minded simpletons and it takes so much strength for me not spend days finding them online and firing back at them until I have the last word. For a short time I practiced wicca (a year and a half)and I loved the teachings, agreed with the ways to be aware of everything and be held accountable to it all. I spent the last 22 years searching for "my" religion but in the end I found that I must hold my own beliefs to be true which meant having no group or home to go to and share with others. My husband's family is devoutly Roman Catholic, so needless to say we do not often agree when religion arises. With two children it has been hard for me to allow them to remain bias and remind them that they are empowered with the choice. If they want to be any of the Christian faiths, I will support them, although I will want to have some really arguments about the validity of the teaching later in life..lol
I think it's funny that most "witches" I have met are quiet well educated in other religions, where as Christians barely even know their own. *sigh* trying no to down talk here, trying :)
I personally am most appalled by any religions that says "If you are not like me you are bad, you are going to hell, whatever" ... I did drugs as a teen, that makes me "bad" and talking to some old guy who tells me I am forgiven just "washes" it away? Eh, not so much... I like that I had to work to understand why I did drugs in the first place, that it ended up being part of who I am, I appreciate the journey... but according to many religions I am supposed to denounce them and pretend they never existed... What I say to my kids is " I follow my heart. If a religion had aspects that I do not agree with then I do not want to force it to work, to try and shrug off things that make me uncomfortable because to have one I have to eat the other, does not allow me to be the best, happiest person I can be for them" .... ahh, well I am glad to hear that you do not allow any of the nay sayers and nasty folks to hurt and offend you... I wonder how they think their WWJD would apply
Thank You for being a strong, clear, kind, well versed and willing educator to the masses

  12. Been reading again some of the comments on Parentdish. Let's just say I was tempted to post the Human Rights Bill, well, that part about Freedom of Religion. But I thought that someone might post that the Bill wasn't in the Bible so it doesn't count. *sighs* Somewhere along the way, the religion I was raised in seemed to have forgotten what it's Jesus said, "Love one another as I love you." I don't think the Man was referring to one particular group of people.
